ACX: audition for paid audiobook narration and production from home
UK narrators can negotiate finished-audio fees or sales royalties; editing, equipment and unpaid auditions make this skilled freelance work.

How it works
ACX, Audible’s audiobook marketplace, lets UK-based narrators create a free profile, upload voice samples and audition for book projects. You can record at home, but you are responsible for a finished production, including editing and mastering to the required audio standards. Negotiate a payment per finished hour, a royalty share, or a combination before accepting a project. A finished hour is an hour of the completed audiobook, not an hour spent working: ACX suggests new producers may need five to seven hours of recording and production time for that output. No fixed hourly wage or supply of successful auditions is promised.
UK participants need an eligible local address, tax identification and banking details. Budget for a quiet recording space, suitable microphone, software, preparation and corrections; auditions do not guarantee a paid contract. For a production-fee deal the rights holder pays you directly by the agreed method after approval, and you should confirm receipt before release. Royalty payments instead come from Audible, with UK payments in pounds and a possible carry-forward for small balances; sales-based returns can be very low. Read the current project contract, payment schedule and rights carefully. Check that the person offering a book actually controls its rights, never pay someone to release your earnings, and keep records for tax. We have not personally auditioned or tested a payout.
