Contra: find remote freelance projects and manage client payments from home
A free portfolio and project marketplace for skilled freelancers, with payment and currency-conversion costs despite its commission-free positioning.

How it works
Contra lets UK freelancers advertise services, show a portfolio and look for remote client projects in areas such as design, development and marketing. You can also use its contracts and invoices with clients you already have. A basic profile is free; agree a rate, deliverables, revisions and payment schedule before starting. This is skilled self-employed work, with unpaid profile-building and pitching time, rather than a supply of simple paid tasks. You must be at least 18 and complete identity and payment checks.
Commission-free does not mean cost-free. Client payment charges, withdrawal processing and currency conversion can apply; the current fee guide lists a US$0.50 UK local-bank payout fee and 0.4% GBP conversion, while PayPal has a separate withdrawal charge. Check the actual quote before withdrawing. Standard payouts include a four-day safety period plus provider transit time, and payment settlement or reviews can add delays. Pro is optional and changes fees and job access; do not pay for it on the assumption that work will follow. Budget for software, equipment and tax, and use agreed milestones to limit disputes. There is no guaranteed income.
