How it works

Upwork is a freelance marketplace where UK adults can pitch for paid client projects, including writing, design, software development and administrative work. The Basic plan costs nothing per month and lets you create a profile and portfolio. This is skilled freelance work rather than a quick survey: finding a suitable client takes time, and a new profile is not guaranteed bookings or any particular hourly rate.

Budget before applying. Job proposals use Connects, with additional Connects priced at US$0.15 each; Basic currently includes no monthly Connects. Freelancer service fees range from 0% to 15% per contract and are shown before you commit. Withdrawal and currency-conversion costs can reduce the amount received. Start with carefully matched jobs, agree the scope and payment terms, and follow the platform’s payment-protection conditions. Avoid clients asking you to pay for equipment or move payments off-platform; submitting a proposal is not a promise of paid work.
